THE COMPANY'S HISTORY
THE SAFARI CENTRE, but under a different name, started business in early 1972. At that stage we were importing and selling Land Rovers into Switzerland and mostly shipping them to South America and South Africa. Previously in Ireland, I was always doing something in connection with Land Rovers, more or less grew up with Serie 1 and 2 models.
Even in those days, most of our customers were young people who wanted to travel around the globe before starting work. This was possible as things, even vehicles were so much cheaper than today. One had a compass and maps, no expensive navigation systems and computors were even available. Things were much easier and even though there were some countries where civil disturbances or wars existed, it was possible to drive to far off destinations like Australia or South Africa without worrying about security. There was no such thing as Internet, personal data being kept in computors at the borders and the demands for luxury, power and useless accessories did not exist!
A Land Rover was simply a heavy piece of metal on leaf springs, petrol engine, lots of noise and quite high fuel consumption, but if you wanted to go "off road" it was the only choice of vehicle - it was the choice between a Land Rover or Land Rover!. People simply bought them, loaded up their belongings, filled a couple of jerry cans with fuel, water, spares, food etc. and disappeared into the big wide world. Life was simple!
Over the years, and as customer demands increased, we started to fully prepare the vehicles, convert them into proper expedition cars adding all sorts of accessories such as extra tanks, suspension kits, raised roofs etc.. After almost 30 years of "ONLY LAND ROVER" we started to work on other makes such as TOYOTA in 2001.
We continued the business until 2011, but due to ilness and finding no suitable successor for the workshops, decided to close this department. A great pity but on the other hand we had had a great 40 years and 99% of the time wonderful customers.
With all this experience in the field, and the non stop demand for our products, we decided to continue in the business, but only concentrate on importing and selling special top quality expedition equipment to a few specialist dealers.
Our aims are very simple, that is to supply our customers with only the best information and advice regarding their vehicle and choice of equipment. We only sell what we use, know and understand ourselves. We leave things like electronics and navigation equipment to others who are much better qualified.
There are so many companies active in this branch, each of them determined to get that valuable sale, irrespective of whether their products are even good quality, necesary or unsuitable for the customer's needs!
We try and advise the customers sensibly regarding the choice of vehicle, the necessary technical changes which may be necessary and the equipment which they require. Our motto is and always has been to equip the vehicle with as much as necessary, as little as possible and always travel lightly. Some customers listen to us and others do not!
Since many years, we have been developing and trading in exclusive top quality 4x4 and outdoor equipment. We always tried to offer products which no one else had, but very often copies arrived on the market. This cannot be avoided, but we still produce many new items in sunny South Africa, test them thoroughly and then distribute them through one of our dealers. All our products are constructed using the very best of materials, stainless steel, top quality aluminium and heavy duty cloth materials. It does not cost very much more, and lasts much longer.
We are great believers and users of equipment from South Africa. We have been importing and selling various items since about 1994. The reasons are that the products are very high quality, simple, extremely robust and prices are more than competitive.
On and off road conditions in Southern Africa countries, makes it necesary for really hard wearing and long life products. The community down there use and abuse the equipment very regularly. The tours and rental operators insist on and have to rely on having equipment which lasts a long time and withstands the harsh treatment.Vast amounts of equipment are now being produced in the far east, China, Thailand etc, but how and where do the tests happen? Here in Europe, a great many people purchase the equipment simply because of looks or because it is the most modern! Our selected products are made to give the user long service!
We always said that the equipment does not have to be expensive but absolutely top quality. If it is good, you will buy only once, and if it is second class you will need replaced after a short space of time.
It is up to you!
